Repair of gasoline generators

    The main malfunctions of gasoline generators

These generally reliable and durable units, which provide emergency, backup, and sometimes the main power supply of various objects, used during construction and repair work, sometimes fail, and then you have to troubleshoot them. The main ones are the following:

Dirty oil;

Pollution of the air cooling system;

Malfunctions of the ignition system;

Lack of fuel supply;

Starter malfunction.

Experienced craftsmen who maintain gasoline generators often notice that the oil in some of them turns out to be very dirty, almost black. If it was replaced on time, that is, within the time frame stipulated by the maintenance measures, then this means that the unit has quite serious problems with the components and parts that it lubricates. It often happens that when diagnosing such generators, serious problems with the piston group of engines are identified and eliminated, namely, the wear of liners and rings.

If the engine of a gasoline generator starts to overheat, then most likely there are serious problems with its air cooling. Most often they consist in an elementary accumulation of dirt and dust on hot units. To prevent this, the air cooling system must be cleaned regularly.

A much more serious problem arises when problems are detected in the ignition system. Usually they manifest themselves in the fact that there is no spark, and therefore the engine simply does not start. There may be several reasons for this: a malfunction of the ignition coil, the candle itself or the cap. In addition, it often turns out that the wiring is faulty.

If the engine refuses to start, then it is quite possible that the reason for this lies in the fuel system. As a rule, this is due to the use of low-quality fuel. In addition, pollution occurs when generators are idle for long periods of time.

As for the malfunctions of the manual starter, there are usually three of them: a cable break, a broken return spring, and a defect in the ratchet that turns the crankshaft. Of course, you can try to repair a starter that refuses to function normally on your own, but it’s better to entrust this matter to professionals.

Often there are also problems associated not with the engine, but with the electrical part of the gasoline generator. The most common of these is that it simply stops producing current. There can be many reasons for this, ranging from faulty electrical wiring to serious breakdowns of the generating device. If such a problem is observed with an inverter unit, then in the vast majority of cases, they consist in defects in the inverter board.

Repair of Diesel generators

Diesel generators and power stations are complex engineering devices. Several factors influence their efficient operation, including the integrity of manufacturers, adherence to specified characteristics outlined in accompanying documentation, and compliance with operational guidelines.

The technical documentation provides clear specifications and recommendations for generator usage and other equipment. Neglecting these requirements often leads to minor malfunctions initially, which can escalate to more complex breakdowns, potentially rendering the generator unusable.

Regular inspections and checks of all components and the generator as a whole ensure stable and prolonged operation. Repairing generators with significant malfunctions typically incurs substantial costs for their owners.

General Recommendations:

The technical documentation specifies the frequency and rules for conducting inspections.

Check the external integrity of the generator. It should be free from cracks, oil leakage through the casing or other openings, and all fastening elements such as bolts and screws should be securely tightened. Check belt tension and clamps.

Observe the engine's operation during startup to ensure it doesn't slow down or stall immediately after starting. Such malfunctions are often related to issues in the generator's wiring.

Ensure fuel availability in the fuel compartment.

Check the power supply voltage after generator startup. Absence of voltage in a formally operating device is usually due to a voltage regulator malfunction.

Malfunctions and Solutions:

There are several main types of breakdowns. Some of them can be rectified by the owner. However, for moderate to severe breakdowns, it's advisable to seek assistance from specialized services, as incompetence in this matter can lead to more serious diesel generator repairs in the future.

Specialists conduct a comprehensive diagnosis of the generator to identify additional malfunctions.

Most issues encountered by regular users are related to engine overheating.

This problem mainly arises if installation rules were violated during initial setup.

Incorrect placement, including the room area.

Using the generator in unsuitable climatic conditions.

Malfunction might result from miscalculation of the cooling radiator used in the generator manufacturing.

The generator operating at maximum power with phase distortions.

Excessive fuel consumption can lead to power unit repairs. This malfunction manifests as uneven starting and unstable operation at low speeds.

The breakdown can be caused by using low-quality fuel or insufficient fuel supply.

Lack of coolant.

Failure (burnout) of the generator winding. This type of malfunction requires generator repair.

The cause is the connection of devices whose power exceeds that of the generator itself.

Phase imbalance during device operation.

Rewinding failure occurs gradually.

Additional malfunctions may include excessively low or high oil pressure, starter problems, engine knocking, and so forth. In all cases, it's advisable to seek qualified assistance from specialists. Their expertise in the specific field helps avoid additional costs.
